Our LAFC competitive teams play in the Duke City Soccer League which is considered the best in the state. Players are expected to commit to the team, be serious and focused at practice and games and wanting to improve their level of play. In addition to teams from Albuquerque and Santa Fe, teams from as far away as Farmington, Las Cruces, El Paso and Durango often participate in this league. Competitive teams typically play in several tournaments each year. Competitive teams start at the U9 age level up to U19. Tryouts for the U9 through U14 competitive teams are held annually in mid-May. Spring-only competitive teams are formed for high school players and the tryouts for the U15 through U18 age groups are typically held in November.
Note that your player can tryout for a team one-year older if they are in the same grade as the younger contingent of the older team (this is not considered a play-up). Exceptional players are allowed to tryout for an older team if it benefits the players development and doesn’t cause the younger team to fold due to lack of player numbers. Exceptional players need to be judged by the team coaches and independent LAYSL-appointed observers to be in the top 20% of the team they tryout for.
US Youth Soccer announced in August of 2015 new standards related to age bracket cut-off dates. A change from school-year to birth-year age-brackets begins with the 2016-17 soccer year. Calendar-year registration means all players born in the same year are now in the same age group. See age chart below.

The Toppers second game on Saturday morning against Rio Rapids Denver, was hard fought earning a 2-0 victory, scoring was started with a fantastic 20 yard free kick by Cohen Mckown, followed up by a first touch volley streaking into the upper corner by Farmington guest player Brandon Lacey. Saturdays championship game against Colorado Edge United, was a well organized defensive fight supported by lightning fast saves from keeper Brendan French. The TOPPERS sealed the deal with a perfect Ben Dattlebaum header off a corner from Cunningham for a 1-0 team win in the championship game.
