Posted on March 29, 2023

Attendance: James Colgan, Kristy Nowak-Lovato, Susie Schillachi, Mike Brown, John Patchett, Lydell Brown, Megan Lee

James Colgan presented and the board unanimously approved the “Board Code of Conduct” which will be added to the LAYSL website and listed as a working memo.

Mike Brown proposed with unanimous board approval, to add the LAYSLVP email to the issues/concerns button on the website. Concerns currently go to the LAYSL President email and he would like to see it going to both President and Vice President.

Susie proposed an opportunity for the board to apply for a grant through the LA Community Foundation. This is a $2,000 grant awarded for youth sports. The application deadline is May 1st. Susie will give a first pass at the application.

April 29th is LAYSL United soccer day. All coaches pushed out the link to purchase tickets on Teamsnap. It appears that ticket purchasing from LAYSL is going very well. The Board is looking into requesting an additional LAYSL United soccer day in August.

Field contacts for county Angelica Gonzalez and LAPS Christina Gonzalez. If coaches are canceling practice, they should contact the county as volunteer hours are based on the amount of time we use the fields. *It was proposed that one LAYSL representative (field coordinator) would contact the county rather than multiple individuals. The county is seeking input for their athletic field closure guidelines. The group will look over current guidelines and provide input and suggestions.

There is a google share document setup by John Patchett for individuals to be able to input their volunteer hours. This includes practice hours where coaches are on the field training. The county is capturing volunteer hours, the plan is to also capture volunteer hours on LAPS fields as well.

LAPS – Susie looking into the possibility of having a standing reservation for LAPS fields and indoor facilities. There are other youth sports groups that have standing reservations.

Board approved LAYSL providing basic first aid kits for the teams. Kits will include ice-packs, band-aids, gauze, tissues. KT tape is not approved to be included in LAYSL provided first aid kits.

LAYSL would like to plan for a summer youth camp asking middle school and high school LAYSL players to volunteer in coaching different groups. This will be discussed with the new LAHS soccer coaches once they are announced as to avoid overlapping the LAYSL program with the high school camp program. A draft for the proposed summer camp will be provided to the board before the next meeting in April.

Goalie Clinic – Excellent turn out and based on survey results, it appears that all who participated enjoyed the experience. Program was free on a first come basis with limited spots at 20 players. LAYSL paid the fee for a 6 hour program at $1,000. An idea is to split the session to have the younger kids participate in just the morning session. The whole day of participation may be too much for the younger players. The Board would like to entertain the possibility for another clinic in late summer/early fall.

Discussion regarding tournament fees. Approximately two years ago, the allocation per competitive team for tournaments was increased to $1,000. Tournament fees have been increasing and teams are asking for increased allotments. Currently, an increase of funds above $1,000 per team is being approved on a case by case basis. Board would like to see additional costs above the allocation be passed along and split by the players. Future increase of tournament fees per team will be revisited at future meetings.

The boys U17 program has exceeded their tournament fees and the difference in cost between the Durango & Colorado Real tournament will be passed on to the players.

James proposed, Susie seconded, and unanimous board approval for purchasing referee kits, approximately $61 shorts/shirts/socks to those individuals that become certified and referee for LAYSL. This is a one time kit upon completion of certification.

Discussion regarding the current concussion protocol. Additional guidance will be provided to coaches regarding LAYSL concussion protocols, NMYSA flyers and CDC “Heads up” concussion steps. These will be distributed through the Pre/Comp Coordinators and the Recreational coordinators to all of the coaches.

Meeting closed at 7:45 pm.
